Hoping to regain fertilityI got a vasectomy about 20 years ago when I was 25. Now, my wife and I would like to try to conceive a child. Does anyone know of anyone who has had success reversing a vasectomy and regaining fertility after twenty years?
I do not even know if it is worth exploring this idea with a urologist since when I originally had the vasectomy it was known that the chances of regaining fertility were seriously diminished after a few years, because the body develops antibodies to its own sperm. Have advances in medicine over the last twenty years changed anything?
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityI would say you definitely have a shot, mine was successfully reversed after 16 years. I would suggest seeing an expert that specializes in reversal. Mine required by passing the Vas and hooking up to the epididiymis and took 5 hours. I live on the East Coast but ended up going to the University of Michigan and seeing Dr. Ohl. You can find him on the web. Good Luck!

Thank you for the advice. That is encouraging.
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityWhat are the chance of success using the sperm retrieval rather than undergoing the vasectomy reversal? Would it be equally successful? Have just begun researching both. This is a second marriage, and our kids from both our previous marriages are nearly grown. We would like to have a child together, but the vasectomy was 16-17 years ago. Would sperm still be there for retrieval or would the antibodies have killed it by now? Or would the reversal be more likely to be successful?
Thanks for any input!
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityBest to see an infertility Doc and see what they say, reversal can be done in the time frame you describe.
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityAsk about trying Clomid it might be helpful, at least there are sperm so the connection has been made. It can take up to a year to see results, good luck.
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityHi,
The same thing happened to my husband & I 3 yrs ago. He had an unsuccessful reversal. It was horrible but we finally went to see a fertility doctor (even though we can't afford IVF) and he recommended having the reversal again. So in June we went to Boston & had it done. I am a little discouraged because we've been for 2 semen analysis and the sperm count is very low : ( The doctor did say it could take a while. BTW my husband only got his vasectomy in 2001.....
Re: Hoping to regain fertilityYour doctor is right it can take up to a year, with some sperm intra uterine insemination may be of benefit and being lower tech than IVF it is also lower cost, good luck
